Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heros may not get Movie’s Mightiest Budget

Interesting article on those holding the purse  strings for the Avengers movie.  Apparently there are concerns over budget and they may want to reign things in.  Coming on the heels of the announcement that MGM has filed for bankruptcy, it is hard to imagine there is not some coincidence.

I understand the budget concerns as no movie is typically a guarantee.  On the other hand, the build up to this movie is unlike anything ever seen.  They are assembling more than just big name actors, but also big name movies. Stringing together multiple blockbuster movies into a crescendo like this is innovative and aggressive at a James Cameron or George Lucas level.  It truly is taking things to the next level at a time when that sort of  creativity seems to only be found in indie movies (milking the 3D craze definitely does not count as creative).  So come on, you have to stand behind it and give it a real shot.

The movie industry has spent the last 10 plus years milking the comic book industry for everything it is worth, and this is the next evolution.  Forget the one shots or the limited series, we are talking universal tie-in.  House of M.  Civil War.  If comic book movies is still the place to be, which it seems is the case, then the Avengers is the place to be going to.  After this, the only thing left is Fred Hembeck and Marvel vs. DC.

So on one hand, lighten up accountants.  This one is in the bag.  Even if you only make a gazillion dollars instead of 40 gazillion dollars you can still be proud of having done something new and fun at the highest level possible.

But on the other hand … Joss Whedon.

This is THE guy.  When you put Joss at the helm you guaranteed greatness.  Joss is going to make the crap out of this movie.  Regardless of budget.  So go ahead, take away daddy’s credit card.  We are all good (note that I have nothing to do with this).  Joss is story first, action second, special effects somewhere down the line after lesbian undertones.  If you are going to start jerking the budget around, well, you hired the right guy.
